Five songs for International Women’s Day

This year marks the 104th anniversary of the first celebration of International Women’s Day.

Conceived by the Socialist Party of America, the very first observation occurred Feb 28, 1908.
Celebrated nearly worldwide — in China, Macedonia, Madagascar and Nepal — the day is an official holiday for women only.
This year, the International Women’s Day theme was Gender Agenda: Gaining Momentum.

Here are five songs that celebrate women or speak of female empowerment.

DJ Vadim and Sarah Jones, “Your Revolution”

Bikini Kill, “Rebel Girl”

Neko Case, “People Got a Lotta Nerve”

Ani DiFranco, “32 Flavors”

Patti Smith, “This Is the Girl”
