How do I sign up or log in?

All you need is an email address! Select a community-friendly username (no inappropriate language, hate speech, slurs of any kind, etc.), provide a valid email and set your password to get up and running.

What happens after I log in?

You will need to verify your account. An email will be sent from our partners at Viafoura with a link to verify your account and activate the features on Xtra. This is an important step to ensure a safe and secure community and to block fake spam accounts.

How do I comment?

Once you’ve verified your account, you’ll be able to find the conversation section at the bottom of select articles across the site. The selection of articles available for commenting is at the discretion of the Xtra editorial team and the conversation section may not appear on every article.

How do I follow categories and contributors?

Follow buttons for categories are present at the top of all category pages, as well as beside the category label on all of Xtra’s articles.

Follow buttons for contributors are at the top of all author pages, as well as at the bottom of the article, where you can find more information about the author.

What is my feed?

Your feed is the place to view all of your account activity: comments, replies, follows, etc. You can access it by pressing on your username at the top of the page to open your account hub and then selecting the feed tab.

What is my profile?

Your profile contains all the key information about your account: username, email, password management, avatar, followers/following. You can access it by pressing on your username at the top of the page to open your account hub and then selecting the profile tab.

What is the community tab?

The community tab is an area of your account where you can view a list of categories and contributors you follow, and a list of community members who follow you. You can unfollow categories and contributors and follow members that follow you from this tab as well.

How do I know when people reply to my comments?

You can be notified while logged into Xtra or by email when other members reply to your comments. Notifications can be found under the feed tab and can be turned on/off in the profile tab.

What happens if I’m suspended or banned?

Members are subject to account bans if their activity is in violation of Xtra’s community guidelines. Moderators will have sole discretion for issuing bans that range from one hour to permanent, and members will be notified with a message on their account when they log in.
