Agokwe nabs eight Doras noms

Story of star-crossed two-sprited lovers scores most in general category

Buddies in Bad Times Theatre’s Agokwe nabbed eight Dora nominations — the most of any production in the general theatre division — including outstanding production, direction of a play for Ed Roy and outstanding new play and performance by a male in a principal role (play) for Waawaate Fobister.

Fobister’s amazing one-man show is the tragic story of star-crossed gay lovers on a reserve in northwestern Ontario.

Also in the general theatre division: DanCap Productions nabbed seven nominations for Jersey Boys, including outstanding production of a musical, direction for Des McAnuff, choreography for Sergio Trujillo and performance by a male in a principal role (musical) for all four Jersey Boys — Jeremy Kushnier, Michael Lomensa, Jeff Madden and Quinn VanAntwerp. And Soulpepper’s A Raisin in the Sun got six nods including outstanding production of a play.

In the independent theatre division Crow’s Theatre garnered the most nominations, 10, for Eternal Hydra, including outstanding production, new play or musical for Anton Piatigorsky, direction for Chris Abraham, performance by a female for both Karen Robinson and Liisa Repo-Martell and performance by a male for David Ferry.

In the opera division the Canadian Opera Company’s eight nominations include two for Fidelio: outstanding production and performance for Adrianne Pieczonka. In the dance division REAson d’etre’s production of Long Live is up for three awards including outstanding choreography for Kathleen Rea and performance for Karen Kaeja.

On occasion, the number of editors and other staff who contribute to a story gets a little unwieldy to give a byline to everyone. That’s when we use “Xtra Staff” in place of the usual contributor info. If you would like more information on who contributed to a particular story, please contact us here.
