AIDS Vancouver Island asks for support

AIDS Vancouver Island (AVI) in partnership with the Victoria Cool Aid Society is asking members of the queer community for its help and support.

The group is one of four finalists for this year’s $1-million Vancity Award and AVI is calling on everyone to vote for its project.

The money would be used to renovate a building in Victoria to be called the Access Health Centre that will be dedicated to serving marginalized people living with HIV/AIDS on Vancouver Island.

As well as a home for AIDS Vancouver Island and the Cool Aid Society, the building will house a full range of medical and social services, as well as rental space for other non-profit HIV groups.

“This is the first time an AIDS service organization has been on the ballot,” says AVI executive director Miki Hansen. “And GLBT people will have their own private space in the new building.”

Only Vancity members can vote in the competition, but anyone can become a Vancity member. The vote closes on Oct 13, so Hansen encourages everyone to act now.
