Calgary Stampeder is ‘perfectly fine’ with gays

Ahead of Grey Cup, player joins Toronto Argonauts in embracing gay rights

Calgary Stampeders running back Jon Cornish has joined Toronto Argonauts players in publicly voicing support for gay rights.

“Canadians as a whole are very accepting,” says Cornish, whose mother is a lesbian. “I’m perfectly fine with it.”

Despite his own acceptance, Cornish is doubtful many of his teammates would welcome a gay player. “The makeup of these locker rooms . . . a lot of people are very uncomfortable with it,” he says.

The Stampeders take on the Argonauts in the Grey Cup championship game on Sunday, Nov 25.
