Capital Xtra’s 2009 Hero Awards are now accepting nominations. It’s time to recognize those who have done good work for Ottawa’s queer community.

Capital Xtra Hero Awards Categories

Political Activist of the Year
A community member or group who is working to form a movement or fight for change on queer issues locally or nationally (eg queer rights, sexual freedom, advocacy, lobbying, direct action, etc).

Community Activist of the Year

A community member or group who has contributed significantly to fostering Ottawa’s queer community and consciousness (eg community service, local activism, etc).

Youth Activist of the Year
A youth (under 25) in the community who, through his or her activism and involvement, has made a significant contribution to Ottawa’s queer community and consciousness (eg high school and university-aged activists, advocates, volunteers, agitators, etc).

AIDS Activist of the Year

A community member who, through his or her involvement, has worked to better the HIV/AIDS community and wider society (eg PWAs, PWA supporters, prevention efforts, education, advocacy, etc).

Sports & Athletics Award
A community member or group whose accomplishments and activities in the athletic realm has contributed to the betterment of Ottawa’s queer community (eg participation on queer sport teams, organization of queer sport outings, etc).

Lifetime Achievement Award
A community member who, through his or hers years of service to the queer community, has made a significant and lasting impact on the Ottawa queer community and consciousness.

Achievement in the Arts

A community member or group who, through his or her artistic or creative endeavors, has contributed to the betterment of Ottawa’s queer community (eg performance arts, organization of creative communities and events, promotion of queer issues through art, etc).

Business of the Year

A local business that has contributed significantly to the betterment of the queer community (eg community sponsorships, participation and representation, etc).
