Fancy trans folk, the rights edition

Angry face Trans folk will cheer… allies too.

Trans rights are on the forefront of a federal bill as today marks the big lobbying push toward equal rights for all genders under the rainbow zamboni.

A third reading of Bill C-389 is today; trans rights will be debated and a vote will follow on Wednesday. Recognize trans people as human by sending a letter to your MP TODAY.

Please take a moment to send an email to your MP today. To make this easy, below is a model letter.

Dear [MP],
As you know, I’m a strong supporter of Bill C-389, the Act to amend the Canadian Human Rights Act and the Criminal Code (gender identity and gender expression).

As a [name of your riding] resident, I’d like to underline the critical importance of including “gender identity” and “gender expression” as prohibited grounds of discrimination within the Canadian Human Rights Act. Adding “crimes motivated by transphobia” to the list of crimes treated by the Criminal Code as potential hate crimes is also long overdue.

When voting on C-389 at third reading on Monday, Feb 7, I strongly encourage you to consider your responsibility to the significant community of transgender, transsexual, cross-dresser, intersex, gender-queer, gender non-conforming and gender-open individuals not only in this province but throughout the country.

I would also ask you to strongly urge as many of your colleagues as possible in the House to vote with you next Wednesday, Feb 9 in order to affirm the equality and freedom from discrimination of all Canadians, regardless of gender identity and gender expression.

I look forward to your reply at the above email address.

Sincerely,
[your name]
