GetEqual takes on the status quo

US rights organization uses alternative methods to further gay rights

As the United States continues to make gains on the gay liberation front, Xtra takes a look at GetEqual, an American gay rights organization.

“The only way that we can apply pressure is by using non-violent civil disobedience and by direct action,” says Robin McGehee, a co-founder of GetEqual.

GetEqual’s aggressive tactics have landed members in jail and gained the group a few enemies, but some see it as instrumental in helping push the gay rights agenda forward.

“We didn’t get in this to make friends or to be liked,” says co-founder Kip Williams.

Williams and McGehee founded the organization in 2010. Although they have stepped back somewhat from the frontlines, their presence and vision continue.

In the video below, they speak with Elvira Kurt. Click here for more on GetEqual.
