Going steady

The west end’s newest queer spot unites vegans and meat eaters in its Miami-inspired home

No one gets left behind at The Steady Café & Bar. This new spot on Bloor West serves up Miami-inspired fare for vegans and carnivores alike. With fresh southern food featuring a Cuban flare, signature cocktails and BYOW nights, The Steady is a welcome addition to a neighbourhood brimming with queer folks.

The café and bar is the brainchild of Tyler Watts and Keaton Taylor, two friends who have been talking about getting this off the ground for two years. Taylor’s background is in management, marketing and design, and Watts has experience working in the food and bar industry and is a self-proclaimed foodie.

“The space is bright and inviting with a playful, art-deco style — think upbeat casual, warm and friendly,” Taylor says. “We’re starting with coffee and snacks during the day, dinner and bar nights, with DJs in the evening. We soon aim to offer brunch, expand our lunch menu and have late-night food.”

The Steady opens its doors on Thursday, June 27, with DJ Blackcat spinning old- and new-school hip hop and R&B jams for The Dirty Hustle. That’s followed by a hot dance party on Saturday, June 29, called Blood, Sweat & Queers, featuring performances by Alaska B, Mikiki and Donnarama and hosts Lexi Sanfino, Morgan M Page and Nina Arsenault (a portion of the proceeds goes to AIDS Action Now). Be sure to try the summer signature cocktail, The Unsteady. — Lauryn Kronick
