‘Hate happened here’

Jer's Vision kicks off local awareness campaign

After two Capital Xtra boxes on Laurier Ave were set ablaze over the Victoria Day weekend, Jer’s Vision swung into action. On Jun 20, youth activist Jeremy Dias and about a dozen volunteers set to work on Bank St in the fledgling rainbow village putting up over 200 posters, he says. They detailed the vandalism to the boxes under the headline “Hate happened here.”

“How is it possible that we can get gay married but we can’t feel safe in our own communities?” asks Dias. “What happened to the Capital Xtra boxes is indicative of violence against gays and lesbians in Canada.”

Since then a newspaper box was reported covered with red paint and AIDS slurs in Gatineau and a box on Bank St was defaced with the slogan “kill gays.”
