Joe Average’s smiling eye

Joe Average is an iconic Vancouver artist. Diagnosed with HIV at age 27, he made the commitment to devote the rest of his life to art. His distinct vision is alive on Davie Street, where he created the banners that adorn our Village.

I saw this clip, from the Simon Fraser University documentary Joe Average, and it really touched me. In the video, Joe talks about witnessing the final moments of his best friend’s life and how his death inspired him to do a series of paintings:
