By a slim margin, lawmakers in Moldova voted to overturn legislation passed in June banning so-called promotion of homosexuality among children, Agence France-Presse (AFP) reports.

Dozens of Orthodox Christians showed up outside the parliament in Chisinau to protest the move to nix the law, expressing the fear that the next step would be acceptance of gay marriage, the report says.

According to AFP, the vote to overturn the measure is aimed at paving the way for European Union membership.
