Ottawa Police conduct three-day hooker sweep

Second operation in less than a month

Ottawa police stepped up their  effort to clean up Ottawa neighbourhoods by conducting a three-day prostitution sweep in Centretown, Lowertown, Vanier and the Merivale area over the Civic Holiday Long Weekend.

A total of 30 people were arrested, including 13 johns and 17 females. Eleven of the arrested males qualified for the john school, a pre-charge diversion program.

The remaining 19 people were charged with communicating for the purpose of prostitution, mischief and breach of conditions. A total of 26 criminal charges were laid.

The Ottawa Police Service regularly conduct prostitution sweeps in an effort to deal with community-identified prostitution — the last sweep was conducted in over June 13 and 14.
