Choice events in the city

Literature

Hard Cover Book Club

When Arthur McDougal’s parents send him away to the Spooner School, he befriends Katrina Felt, the troubled daughter of a movie star. While Arthur’s confidence grows, Katrina is gradually pulled down by secrets and memories of a difficult past. Men gather to discuss Sebastian Stuart’s The Hour Between.

Thursday, July 16, 7pm. Centretown Community Health Centre, 420 Cooper St. aco-cso.ca

Wet: You Know What to Wear

Most penises spend their days tucked down and hidden away. Their owners wander the city, doing their best to prevent or obscure any protrusions. When is it the penis’s time to shine? To break free, to be admired, to maybe get a little fondle? It’s now, at this party for swimsuit-clad men. Speedos are particularly welcome.

Saturday, July 18, 9:30pm. Centretown Pub, 340 Somerset St W. For more information, find them on Facebook.

Offbeat (AV Club)

This party is not only a rarity — both queer and focused on urban music — but a feast for all the senses. Or a couple of them anyway. DJs Dan Valin and Kitty Funk spin banging tracks and Gifstream provides mind-bending visuals. Partial proceeds go to Queer Mafia’s workshops and other community-building endeavors.

Saturday, July 25, 10:30pm. Babylon Nightclub, 317 Bank St. thequeermafia.com

Geek

Kind Board Game Night

Hush! This is a rare treat: the opportunity to observe the nerd in its natural environment. See how it adjusts its really-rather-thick glasses and rolls dice that for some reason has far too many sides. Most regard this creature as awkward, but here in its proper milieu — at an event for playing tabletop games — its strange behaviour seems almost graceful.

Sunday, July 19, 5pm. Monopolatte, 640 Somerset St W. ptsottawa.org

Going Down: A Guide to Fellatio

The penis has few joys. No hobbies. Gets little say. He can’t even vote. But now and then he gets to pop into a warm, soft mouth. So it is very important that that mouth knows what to do once he’s in there. This workshop covers the ins and outs of sucking cock, from basic anatomy to advanced technique. Open to everyone, no matter their gender or orientation.

Monday, July 20, 6:30pm. Venus Envy, 226 Bank St. venusenvy.ca

Canada’s Capital Kings: Flashback Friday

Tired of hearing the same forty or so songs over and over again on the radio? Now you can enjoy the songs you used to hear over and over again on the radio. The drag king troupe Canada’s Capital Kings strap on their mustaches and sideburns (which somehow fails to detract from their sexiness) to perform songs from yesteryear.

Friday, July 17, 9:30pm. The Lookout, 41 York St. facebook.com/canadascapitalkings

No Pants Dance Party

No need to strain your imagination trying to undress them with your eyes — they’re already pantsless. With folks dancing in only their underwear and the burlesque troupe Rockalily performing, little is left to the imagination at this bash. Includes performances by special guests Diamond Minx and Mr Yoyothrower.

Friday, July 17, 10pm. Babylon Nightclub, 317 Bank St. rockalilyburlesque.com
