Choice events in the city this week

Hamburger Mary’s soft launch

It only feels like it’s taken longer than the second coming of Christ (or the first coming of Conni Smudge), but the wait’s been worth it. One of the oldest eateries in the Village reopened this week with a soft launch. Check out the new and improved Hamburger Mary’s, with clean, stainless steel as far as the eye can see, an expanded menu with lots of the old favourites, top of the line kitchen equipment and waiters so hot you’ll be craving a hot dog.

Limited hours for this week only so please drop by and check. Hamburger Mary’s, 1202 Davie St. facebook.com/pages/Hamburger-Marys/138400476175272

Vancouver’s Next Vocal Superstar Finale

We’ve all had our favourites – mine is the hottie from Iceland – so will it be your favourite or mine? Auditions are over; tonight is the big finale with the top six contenders vying for the cash prize. There’s so much talent in this round that they should all be winners.

7pm. Celebrities Nightclub, 1022 Davie St. Tickets $10 at celebritiesnightclub.com

Friday, May 20

Wet & Wild

According to Del “I always walk this funny after auditions” Stamp, he has found the Holy Grail of daddy dick for tonight’s shower show. Twelve inches of thick tubular daddy meat will be steaming up the shower stall. I’d hate to be the one that has to follow that act. Always an awesome night of fun, with go-go boys, shower shows and hot, hairy men. Why go anywhere else?

9pm. Shower show 11pm. Pumpjack Pub, 1167 Davie St. $5 cover after 9pm. pumpjackpub.com

Rev-E-Rie

An interesting premise for a new night at XY: a journey through a drag queen’s wildest dreams and most terrifying nightmares. If we were talking Peach Cobblah or Carlotta Gurl, I would be very afraid to take on that journey. But the host of tonight’s adventure, Gia Metric, may surprise (and definitely entertain) you. Joining Gia Metric is Josh Burns with nothing less than a freak show and Maxwell Maxwell to keep you on the dance floor all night long.

10pm–2am. XYYVR, 1216 Bute St. Cover starting at $5. facebook.com/events/238299143199831/

Saturday, May 21

Surrey BC Coronation Glamour Ball

Is it just me or does it seem like there is a Coronation every month somewhere? It’s like one of those scary dreams you just can’t wake up from. This one takes place in our favourite suburb, New Westminster, as the Glamour Ball Weekend promises to bring you the glamour of days past. Tonight is the Coronation Ball filled with performances, the last walk of the current royalty and the introduction of the new Empress, all taking place in a historic theatre with three levels of banquet seating.

Doors 5pm. The Columbia, 530 Columbia St, New Westminster. Tickets $40 at door. For a full listing of all weekend events go to epama.ca/ball2016.htm

Playboy With Jane Smoker

Nothing starts off a long weekend quite like me after a few cocktails trying to hip-hop. (I learned my lesson and that is not going to happen again.) Jane Smoker and TFD Presents bring you a monthly night of rap, R&B and hip-hop with DJ Domtop. Guest playmate for tonight is RJ Brown. Plus, this being a long weekend, you will have extended hours to find your own Playboy bunny.

11pm–4am. XYYVR, 1216 Bute St. Cover starts at $5. facebook.com/events/1029582787108986/

Sunday, May 22

Reset Sunday

I’ve had more than a few of these: those Sunday mornings where you wake up, roll over, look at someone strange and think “please god, let this be a dream,” before sneaking out without finding your underwear. After a two-year hiatus, ME Events brings back Reset Sunday with its monthly t-dance, featuring the sexiest DJ/bartender in the Village, DJ Cox, followed by the talented Zarfan at 4pm.

2pm. Playhouse, 1240 Thurlow St. No cover. facebook.com/events/1618280481824649/

Charity St Peters

One of the greatest queens of our time, Charity St Peters, Empress 7 of Vancouver, passed away this year. Please join her dearest friends at her Celebration of Life to remember her and say goodbye.

Doors 6pm, show 7pm. XYYVR, 1216 Bute St. Suggested donation at door to benefit DMS charities. facebook.com/events/526491687550966/

Diva’s Den

I hear this party is just as wild as the men’s parties, though I haven’t been myself since it’s not really for me. The annual women-for-women strip show supports the Vancouver Dyke March and Festival, with professional and amateur performers letting loose for charity. Amy Wilding hosts this year. If you wish to show off the goods, please contact [email protected]

7:30pm. The Penthouse, 1019 Seymour St. Tickets $15 at brownpapertickets.com and Little Sister’s, 1238 Davie St. facebook.com/events/140589676339374

Followed by Babe Bang, a seasonal all-ladies open house sex party — the official after-party to this year’s Diva’s Den. 10pm–3am. Club 8×6, 1775 Haro St. Entrance by donation with all proceeds going to Vancouver Dyke March. facebook.com/babebangme

AIDS Candlelight Memorial

AIDS Vancouver is the host community organizer of this year’s Candlelight Memorial to remember those who have lost their lives to AIDS, to support those living with HIV/AIDS and to honour those affected. The year’s theme is Engage, Educate, Empower.

8–9pm. Alexandra Park, 1755 Beach Ave. Info at facebook.com/aidsvancouver/

Ruff

I must be getting old: I love long weekends but with so much going on, especially this time, I need two days off after the long weekend just to recover. MN Events is back with Ruff’s newest event, with DJs Nick Bertossi and Nark (SEA) Mr International Bottom Forty. With performances by Mr Ruff 2016, Shane, along with Jesse, Anuar, Thomas, Drake and the sexy Boy Spence. As always, if you haven’t had your fill at Ruff, the after-party continues around the corner at Steamworks, where all you need is a towel and a hard-on.

9pm–2am. The Pint, 455 Abbott St. Tickets $15/$20 at Top Drawers, 809 Davie St or ruffparty.com. facebook.com/events/935671809884637/

Cuffed Fetish

Just what my liver and lower extremities need: a new kinky club night. But it does sound like fun. A front and centre dungeon on the main stage and a dedicated rope room is really all you need to know. Cuffed Fetish is putting the kink back into fetish nights at the club with the most history in the fetish scene. And of course DJ Del Stamp will be there to make you feel like dancing even though you are bound to a table.

9pm–3am. The Hindenburg, 23 West Cordova St. Cover TBA. facebook.com/events/252032235147212

Hershe Bar

It’s going to be a weekend of girls gone wild in the West End. DJ Nathalie Morel from the UK will get you in the groove at this popular women’s party from Flygirl. Pull on your single’s bracelet and start the fun.

10pm–2am. The Red Room Ultra Bar, 398 Richards St. Tickets $15 at flygirlproductions.com or Little Sister’s, 1238 Davie St.

EnSoul

After a full day of jumping from party to party as the social butterflies, or tramps, that we are, this is just what I need to finish the night. DJ Deko-ZE (TO), one of Canada’s top DJs, returns for an evening of quality house music.

10:30pm–2am. XYYVR, 1216 Bute St. Tickets $15 at eventbrite.com Tickets at door if available. facebook.com/events/1705531889687424/

United

If I end up with a sleep disorder, I wonder if I can blame Big Roger for all these after-hours parties he throws? There was one Pride where I barely remember leaving one of his parties, and it was so sunny out I had to pause to figure out if it was 5pm or 5am as I stumbled home. This will be no exception as they head back to where it all began. DJs Phil B (SFO) and Quest will keep you going until the wee hours of Monday morning when you leave for breakfast.

1am. Note: this is a Sunday night after-hours party starting Monday morning. Gorg-O-Mish, 695 Smithe St. Tickets $30 at facebook.com/events/611751278980047/

Wreck Day at the Beach

Wreck Beach reminds me of my mom. I know, WTF, right? But every Saturday she would drag me downtown where she would window-shop for hours. A habit I seem to have carried over into my time at Wreck, where I too window-shop to my heart’s content. That one’s too small, too big, oh there’s one that will fit — just like mom used to say! Invite your friends, bring the guy from work you always wanted to see naked, leave behind your inhibitions and kick off the season in this yearly celebration of summer.

10:30am. Wreck Beach, University Endowment Lands, UBC. facebook.com/events/513542385496097/

Unmask: Street Smarts

We may not like to admit it, but sometimes gay men can overindulge. Mpowerment helps younger gay, bi or queer men make informed choices by supplying workshops to empower you. Tonight is about substance use in conjunction with sexual encounters. Booze, pot, coke, prescription drugs: how do you have a healthy sex life when adding substances to the equation? Ask questions and get answers.

6:30pm. Mpowerment Headquarters, 568 Seymour St. facebook.com/events/254929974859012
