Popping culture: Hercules & Love Affair teases new single

“If I burned down the city, would you put out the flames?” is the question Hercules & Love Affair asked yesterday.

The answer to that incendiary question can be found in “Do You Feel the Same?” the most recent single by the New York–based dance outfit. The single comes out on April 14 but is available now for streaming on SoundCloud.

H&LA has been putting out dancefloor anthems since 2008’s “Blind,” featuring Antony Hegarty. The ever-changing roster of musicians and vocalists that have performed with the group include the aforementioned Hegarty, Nomi Ruiz (who went on to form Jessica 6), Kim Butler and even Bloc Party’s Kele Okereke. The band, masterminded by Andy Butler, is getting ready to put out a new album, entitled The Feast of the Broken Heart, this May.

The sound is a continuation of Hercules & Love Affair’s love for soulful vocals and sweet grooves. This first taste is slightly reminiscent of a quasi-bootleg 12-inch that Butler put out on his own label, Mr INTL, entitled “The Groove,” a rework of Madonna’s “Into the Groove.”
