Queer Mafia shines the spotlight on local talent with Drop Low event

Downtown Ottawa avoided a tornado today, but if you took shelter, stay down low until tomorrow’s ultimate summer party event.

Gay event planning collective The Queer Mafia (QM) invites Ottawa’s queers to Babylon Nightclub Saturday, July 20 for Oh My Jam’s Drop Low edition and Mafioso member Dillon Black says what makes Drop Low unique when compared to other QM events is that local talent is thrust into the spotlight.

“It’s really grounded in our own Ottawa community and to help our community grow and showcase all of the amazing talent and folks who are here. We really wanted to have an event that’s based in the warmth and love that we have for our amazing communities,” Black says. “We wanted to create a unique space for everyone to come together and celebrate Ottawa’s queer communities.”

Conceptualized by QM board member and performing DJ D-luxx Brown, Drop Low will features a set by queer mixing artist and Mercury Lounge Hump Night staple DJ Grace and the Assassination dance crew who Black says will put on a “fantastic” display.

“They are a hip hop troupe and will be dancing with us all night,” Black adds. “If anything I think folks should come out for the amazing talented DJs [and] these dancers.”

All proceeds from the event will go towards Project Acorn and the Venus Envy bursary fund, “making it quite focused on the sustainability and celebration of our youth and communities,” Black says.
