Shake it up, make a call and dance your ass off

There’s a lot going on in the next few days in Halifax, Sydney, Fredericton and on your telephone.

I don’t know about you, but when someone calls with a survey, I tend to stay on the phone. Whoever is on the other line is getting paid for it, and they probably have the phone slammed on them all the time. But most of the time the data is used for marketing.

Not in this case. Male Call Canada is, according to its website, “a university-community collaboration that surveys men who have had sex with men.” If you’re worried that this is just another marketing ploy, apparently it isn’t. “The Male Call Canada study is undertaken by a team of investigators from across Canada, and includes both academic and community researchers, along with a National Advisory Group.” Sign me up.

The AIDS Coalition of Cape Breton’s queer youth advisory committee seem to be rather busy this month. They have a bunch of events planned in the Sydney area, including a talk on anti-transphobia. They also recently started a new trans support group. You can find out more information on their website.

On the party side of things for this weekend, Boom! in Fredericton is having a black-and-white party this Friday, featuring two DJs from Saint John playing electro house and more. Check out the Facebook event for more details.

If you’re looking for something to do tonight in Halifax, you may want to check out the Shake It Out disco night at Menz Bar. The night features DJ AA Wallace (of Sleepless Nights fame) and Dubious (Prize Records, Bear Funk). This is for serious disco lovers. You can even download a mix by Wallace for your listening pleasure. For all you dancing queens out there, ABBA will not be served this evening (unless in edit form).

If you’re in a mood for disco edits, may I suggest this?

Extra points if you can name both the original instrumental track, as well as the vocalist who starts to soar around the three-minute mark.
