She’s a riot

High-camp, outdoor film screenings all summer

It’s a good time to be a funny lady. As Melissa McCarthy’s Tammy hits the big screen this summer, the women of yuks have cemented themselves as here to stay and to make you pee yourself laughing. But there have always been funny girls in movies, and Harbourfront Centre can’t wait to show them to you when the sun goes down.

Every Wednesday throughout the summer, the Free Flicks: Funny Girls program will host outdoor viewings of funny, female-centric movies. It’s an all-star lineup, from Clueless to Desk Set, capping off with Babs herself in Funny Girl.

The movies aren’t limited to those that feature funny female actors; some were chosen because of the women who wrote or directed them. Or in the case of In a World... all three conditions were met: the film was written by, directed by and stars the extremely talented Lake Bell.

Each showing will be hosted by Toronto’s Norman Wilner, senior film writer for Now magazine.

The showcase finishes with an audience choice screening. Voting is open now, but with having to choose between Bridesmaids or Private Benjamin, don’t expect to have an easy time deciding. Unfortunately for all, Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion is absent from the schedule.

Free Flicks: Funny Girls runs until Wed, Aug 27 at Harbourfront Centre, 235 Queens Quay W. Go to harbourfrontcentre.com/freeflicks for the full schedule.
