SIU probes death at Toronto gay strip club

Quebec man went into 'medical distress' outside Remington's on Yonge Street

Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is investigating the death of a man after an “interaction” with police outside Toronto gay strip club Remington’s in the early hours of Aug 29.

The man, who died while in police custody outside the Yonge Street club at about 2:30am, was arrested inside following a clash with Remington’s staff, says SIU spokesperson Monica Hudon.

Toronto police, who could not be reached for comment, had responded to a 1am call regarding an altercation between a customer and staff members, Hudon says.

“They arrested him on the second floor of the building, then took him out to the cruiser. That’s when the man went into medical distress,” she says.

Hudon says that the 50-year-old man is from Quebec and that it is not known if he is gay. She says the SIU is investigating the nature of the medical distress. No names are being released unless charges are laid.

Remington’s management was not available for comment.

The SIU has assigned five investigators and two forensic investigators to the case.

Anyone with information regarding this case is asked to contact the lead investigator at 416-622-1886.
