United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon condemned Russia’s anti-gay laws in an address to the International Olympic Committee Feb 6.

Though he did not mention the laws by name, he made a point of reminding the organization of the need to protect gay people as the Olympic Games got underway, The Guardian reports.

“We must all raise our voices against attacks on lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or intersex people,” he said. “We must oppose the arrests, imprisonments and discriminatory restrictions they face . . . Hatred of any kind must have no place in the 21st century.”
