Vancouver lawyer honoured

Queer Vancouver lawyer Kenneth Smith has been honoured by the BC Human Rights Coalition with the Renate Shearer Memorial Award for his work on behalf of Canada’s queer community.

A partner with Smith & Hughes, Smith spearheaded several significant cases that have expanded equality rights for queers in Canada.

Smith was also involved in the landmark BC Appeal Court same-sex marriage case on behalf of a religious group that intervened in support of same-sex marriage.

He was a key figure in the creation of the Vancouver Gay and Lesbian Centre Legal Clinic and the Human Rights Legal Clinic Program. In addition, Smith assisted with the provisions of the Adoption Act regarding adoptions by same-sex partners.
