Vancouver to host drag king conference

Bent Umbrella, a group of Vancouver gendernaughts, activists and their allies has won a bid to host the 9th International Drag King Community Extravaganza in Vancouver in October of 2007.

The event will be a four-day conference of people interested in exploring gender through performance, art and dialogue. Included in the activities will be an all-ages performance, an academic conference, a photo exhibit, a short film series, a showcase with as many as 250 performers and another show called Dragdom which will feature 150 drag performers.

It will mark the second time the event has been hosted in Canada and the first time it’s been hosted on the West Coast.

“Not only are we home to so many drag king troupes now, we said in our bid that Vancouver is one of the top up-and-coming gay travel destinations,” says Suzan Krieger, one of the organizers. “I think it’s really going to help young people to be able to go and explore gender.”
