VIDEO: Be sexually honest with each other, says Jim Deva

Community hero calls for healthy sexual leadership at Xtra town hall

In what no one expected to be his last public speech, Little Sister’s co-owner and community leader Jim Deva was in fine form Sept 9, as he called for healthy sexual leadership at Xtra’s town hall.

In what no one expected to be his last public speech, Little Sister’s co-owner Jim Deva was in fine form Sept 9 as he praised masturbation and urged the community to be leaders in sexual honesty.

“Masturbation is a really healthy thing to talk about,” he told an Xtra town hall on the politics of being too racy for public life. “Society would be a lot better and a lot more healthy if it actually talked about sexual issues.

“You know, we as queer people have been doing this for a long time,” he continued. “And this is one of the things that we have to take on: we have to be sexually honest with each other and with society. It’s extremely important for the sake of all society.”

Deva was responding to Trish Kelly’s short-lived run for political office in Vancouver’s upcoming municipal election. Watch his full speech above and Xtra’s video report on the town hall here.

Deva died suddenly on Sept 21. A celebration of his life will take place Saturday, Sept 27 from 3:30 to 5:30pm at St Andrew’s-Wesley United Church (1012 Nelson St). The family asks that donations be made to the LOUD Foundation Scholarship Fund in lieu of flowers.
