Why four Latina lesbians were accused of raping children

Southwest of Salem screens at the Vancouver Queer Film Festival

In Southwest of Salem, filmmaker Deborah S Esquenazi looks at a modern-day witch hunt, where four openly gay women of colour were accused and convicted of gang raping children through Satanic abuse.

It’s the story of “four Latina lesbians in the state of Texas who were wrongfully convicted of a really heinous crime,” Esquenazi says.

The women were dubbed the San Antonio Four by unforgiving media who covered the case at the time.

Daily Xtra spoke with Esquenazi when she was in Toronto for the 2016 Hot Docs International Documentary Festival, to ask why police targeted these women.
