You’re my Hero: nominees announced

Capital Xtra Hero Awards honour local activists & agitators

A student fights back after he is forbidden from distributing condoms at his high school. A professor works to improve the lives of sex workers. A couple starts a gay rugby team. Capital Xtra honours them all with the announcement of their nominations for the Hero awards (see list below).

Also this year, Tom Barnes will receive a lifetime achievement award for his volunteer work with Pink Triangle Services over the last 23 years. He is also the chief librarian of the Kelly McGinnis Library — a position he’s held for roughly a decade. He will join a list of lifers that includes novelist Gabriella Goliger, community organizer Joanne Law, lawyer Philip MacAdam and activists Charlie Hill and Barry Deeprose.

Check out the Hero Awards reception Feb 7 for a chance to congratulate and conspire with the nominees. Afterwards, join the AIDS Committee of Ottawa for the Snowblower 2009 kick-off party and dance the night away.
